Overview

Who it is for

Hair salons, colourists and barbers — one of the largest groups of small businesses that need a website, and one this catalogue had nothing for. Lustre is built around the three things a salon’s clients actually come to the site for: what it costs, how long it takes, and what the colour will look like.

Real hair on the front page

The opening is thousands of strands of hair simulated on the graphics card — WebGPU compute shaders stepping every strand, with a WebGL2 fallback running the same simulation on the processor. Move the pointer through it and it parts and follows the stroke. It is lit the way hair is lit (Kajiya–Kay with the two shifted highlights real fibres have) and coloured the way hair is coloured: by how much of the two melanins is in the fibre, with the display curve fitted to a colourist’s level chart.

The shade studio

Pick a level from 1 to 10, a tone, a technique — all-over, balayage, root shadow, lived-in — and a finish, and see it on that same hair. A new shade goes on from the root, the way colour does. Every lookbook entry stores its formula and can be tried on the hair in one click; “Ask for this colour” ticks the right service and writes the formula into the booking note.

A menu that prices itself

Each service is entered once — minutes in the chair, minutes processing, a base price — and the salon sets its stylist-level multipliers in the Customizer. Every price on the site follows. The planner lays the chosen services out as a visit, in the order a salon works, with the processing time when the chair is free, and the booking request is re-priced on the server rather than trusting the browser.

Plus a team row that opens up by the pointer, opening hours drawn to scale with a line where now is, a journal, and fallbacks all the way down: WebGL2, a photograph, and still hair for visitors who prefer reduced motion.
