Sakuga

Real-time cel shading, a live 24fps frame-hold comparator, and a real genga-to-douga inbetween interpolator — the actual craft of 2D animation, not a fan-site skin. The hero is a real-time cel-shaded 3D scene with a quantized diffuse ramp, fresnel rim light, and inverted-hull outline; the frame-hold comparator runs a genuine 24fps clock sampling a new pose every one, two, or three ticks; and the inbetween tool linearly interpolates every joint between two real key poses. A seven-stage production-pipeline reference and eight demo productions span four real broadcast formats and eight genres.

Overview

Sakuga is for a small 2D animation studio — the kind of site a prospective client or recruit checks to see what the studio has made and how it actually works.

Three things in it are real rather than decorative:

1. A real-time cel-shaded 3D hero. A quantized diffuse ramp, a fresnel rim light and an inverted-hull outline — the same real-time toon-shading recipe used across the anime-style game industry — implemented in raw GLSL. Fully present as a single static render under prefers-reduced-motion, not skipped.

2. A genuine frame-hold comparator. Animation on ones, twos and threes is run against a real 24fps clock: the canvas only samples a new pose every 1, 2 or 3 ticks and holds it, exactly as a digital ink-and-paint pipeline does.

3. A real genga-to-douga inbetween interpolator. Two key poses are defined as joint coordinates; the slider linearly interpolates every joint between them — the same arithmetic an inbetween animator’s tie-down does by hand.

Eight demo productions span four real broadcast formats (TV series, movie, OVA, short) and eight genres, each with real per-episode genga/douga drawing-count estimates. Self-hosted Shippori Mincho, Zen Kaku Gothic New and Fragment Mono.

Signature 1: real-time cel-shaded 3D hero — quantized diffuse ramp, fresnel rim light, inverted-hull outline, raw GLSL, degrades to one real static render (not skipped) under prefers-reduced-motion. Signature 2: frame-hold comparator running a genuine 24fps clock, sampling and holding a new pose every 1/2/3 ticks exactly as on-ones/twos/threes animation timing works. Signature 3: genga-to-douga inbetween interpolator — two key poses as joint coordinates, slider linearly interpolates every joint between them. Seven-stage real production pipeline reference (storyboard through editing) with correct Japanese terminology. Eight demo productions across 4 real broadcast formats and 8 genres. Self-hosted Shippori Mincho, Zen Kaku Gothic New, Fragment Mono. Vanilla Three.js, no build step.

A one-of-a-kind jewelry maison storefront: a real Three.js/WebGL2 gem viewer lets shoppers drag-orbit each piece, swap between 18K gold, rose gold, platinum and blackened metal in real time, and read live facet-angle, refractive-index, critical-angle and fire-frequency numbers off an on-canvas HUD as the stone turns. A browsing-history-driven style curator recommends pieces from the visitor's own session, computed entirely client-side with no dependency on any external AI service. Runs as a compiled React/Vite storefront embedded inside a classic WordPress theme, with a custom "Luxury Products" catalogue (no WooCommerce dependency).

Two real calculations carry the site: a WebGL2 hexagon-packing comb field, and a waggle-dance bearing calculator built on the actual relationship a forager's dance encodes. The comb field runs genuine flat-top axial and pixel conversion with cube-coordinate rounding and an exact hexagon SDF, while the waggle calculator combines a NOAA simplified solar-position formula with von Frisch's real sun-relative bearing relationship. Colonies, honey, sites, services, testimonials, and markets run as custom post types behind a working AJAX inquiry endpoint, for apiaries and small honey producers.
