Burl

A real hand-written WebGL2 wood-grain shader for a background, not a texture image — plus a real USDA Wood Handbook movement calculator, a real Janka hardness selector, and a genuinely computed bookmatch visualizer. Cathedral-to-quartersawn grain transition tied to the same real wood science the tools compute.

Overview

Burl is a bespoke furniture and cabinetmaking atelier theme — dining tables, case goods, seating, lighting, and architectural millwork. The persistent background isn’t a decorative wood-texture image: it’s a hand-written, zero-dependency WebGL2 shader that renders real wood grain, and every interactive tool on the site runs on real, published wood-science data, not invented numbers.

1. A real wood movement calculator. Enter a species, board dimension, current and target moisture content, and a cut orientation (flatsawn / quartersawn / riftsawn), and it computes actual dimensional change in inches using the standard linear-shrinkage approximation from the USDA Forest Products Laboratory’s Wood Handbook — the same real-world reason furniture makers pay more for quartersawn stock in wide stable panels.

2. A real Janka hardness species selector. A live-ranked bar chart of published Janka hardness figures (lbf) across eight real furniture species, with genuine grain/color notes and use-case guidance grounded in the actual hardness numbers — not marketing copy.

3. A real bookmatch visualizer. Genuinely computed, not two swapped stock photos: one “flitch leaf” of procedurally generated grain is mirrored pixel-for-pixel beside itself, demonstrating the real geometric symmetry that makes bookmatched veneer panels work.

The signature GPU background renders real growth-ring grain from a fullscreen WebGL2 fragment shader and blends between two real cut-pattern distance fields as you scroll — an arched “cathedral” flatsawn field near the top, settling into straight parallel quartersawn lines deeper into the page, the same real distinction the movement calculator explains. 15 demo portfolio pieces across 5 categories with real sourced woodworking photography, a full 6-stage commission-process page, and a species-library page.

Signature: hand-written zero-dependency WebGL2 wood-grain flow-field shader — fbm domain-warped growth rings blending between a flatsawn (cathedral) and quartersawn (straight) distance field on scroll, warm walnut/brass palette. Signature 2: real wood movement calculator (USDA FPL Wood Handbook shrinkage coefficients, PHP/JS parity). Signature 3: real Janka hardness species selector. Signature 4: genuinely computed mirror-symmetric bookmatch visualizer. Capability-gated: reduced-motion/no-WebGL2/weak-GPU/save-data never touch the live canvas, CSS gradient fallback only. Self-hosted OFL fonts. No third-party JS libraries. 15 demo commissions across 5 categories with real sourced woodworking/joinery photography.

Release

v1.0.0 A real hand-written WebGL2 wood-grain shader for a background, not a texture image — plus a real USDA Wood Handbook movement calculator, a real Janka hardness selector, and a genuinely computed bookmatch visualizer. Cathedral-to-quartersawn grain transition tied to the same real wood science the tools compute.

The complete, dated version history ships in the theme’s CHANGELOG file. Every purchase includes lifetime access to future updates.

Chatoyance Featured

A one-of-a-kind jewelry maison storefront: a real Three.js/WebGL2 gem viewer lets shoppers drag-orbit each piece, swap between 18K gold, rose gold, platinum and blackened metal in real time, and read live facet-angle, refractive-index, critical-angle and fire-frequency numbers off an on-canvas HUD as the stone turns. A browsing-history-driven style curator recommends pieces from the visitor's own session, computed entirely client-side with no dependency on any external AI service. Runs as a compiled React/Vite storefront embedded inside a classic WordPress theme, with a custom "Luxury Products" catalogue (no WooCommerce dependency).
